HEART SHUT-DOWN

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”                 (Lamentations 3:22 ESV)

You may experience times when your heart simply refuses to be comforted.
I call it “emotional jello” kind of living – you feel simply suspended.
You’re alive but you feel numb, disconnected, and unable to participate fully in things going on around you. It may seem like a sheer struggle to even access your feelings, much less experience any kind of positive emotions like happiness or fulfillment.

Being overwhelmed with so much to do and so many to take care of may have landed you in this place. Or it may have to do with the death of someone close to you, or betrayal of someone close, or JUST LIFE.

Even when you love the Lord, and walk closely with Him, getting hit with devastating news OR continuing with an ongoing struggle - can pull the rug out from under you, leaving you stunned and unable to function.

So what can you do when your soul goes into lock-down?

Being a follower and lover of Jesus, I KNOW what to do:

Keep speaking the Name of Jesus
There’s POWER in calling out His Name. He runs to His children when we cry out, and leads us through the fog until we get a firm footing once again.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” (Psalm 40:2.)

Hold onto – AND HOLD – His Word
For me, there’s a comfort and calmness in both speaking God’s Word and physically holding it. The Word of God is not like any other self-help encouragement. It is sheer supernatural power available to us.

For the Word of God is living and active and full of power – making it operative, energizing, and effective. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit (the completeness of a person), and of both joints and marrow (the deepest parts of our nature), exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12 Amp.)

Journal your thoughts
Talk it out to God on pen and paper or from your keyboard. Journaling offers benefits for spiritual and emotional well-being. It takes longer to “write it out” than to merely “speak it”. This process is healing and helps to reduce stress and anxiety as it amplifies your connection with your Father.

In pouring out my thoughts to Him (private and heartfelt), I ask Him my WHY questions and begin to experience His compassion in my confusion. It’s an emotional release that I dump into His Heart and He receives.

In my distress I cried to the LORD, and He heard me.” (Psalm 120:1 NKJ.)

Declare Him as HEALER
The perfect world that God created has been trashed since the day sin entered it. Along with the earth, our souls have been misaligned from God’s perfect design of man and woman. When an emotional vice clamps itself around my heart. . . I run to Jesus, embrace His Word, empty my heart into His, and thank Him for being the Healer of my soul.

Dear Savior of My Soul, thank You for always being there to “set right what has gone wrong.” I answer Your invitation to Be still and know You are God.
Thank You for knowing me, loving me, and taking care of every single thing that goes wrong in earthly living. I rejoice in who You are, and in who I am in You. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to YOU, oh Jesus. Amen.

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!”
(2 Corinthians 4:17 NLT)
